Dr. Richard Conti holds an endowed chair entitled “Palm Beach Heart Association Eminent Scholar” (Clinical Cardiology), Professor of Medicine, and Adjunct Professor of Physiology at the University of Florida College of Medicine. He is a distinguished 1952 graduate ofCentralCatholicHigh School in Allentown,Pennsylvania, a 1956 Phi Beta Kappa graduate ofLehighUniversity and a 1960 AOA graduate of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He received his medical training on the Osler Medical Service of theJohnsHopkinsHospital and his cardiology training at Johns Hopkins. He served on the cardiology faculty at that institution from 1968 through 1974 as Medical Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and was Associate Professor of Medicine. In 1974 at the age of 39, he became Professor of Medicine and Director of the Cardiovascular Division at theUniversity of Florida. Dr. Conti’s clinical, investigative and teaching interests are primarily in the area of ischemic heart disease, e.g. chronic ischemia, acute ischemia (unstable angina and myocardial infarction), coronary artery spasm and silent myocardial ischemia. Dr. Conti has been active as a member of all the education committees of theAmericanCollege of Cardiology and has been past chairman of theACC Extramural Program Committee. As chairman of the Self Study Educational Programs Committee, he was responsible for the development of theAmericanCollege of Cardiology Self Assessment Program (ACCSAP). He has served on the Subspecialty Board of Cardiovascular Diseases of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) as well as the Cardiology Advisory Committee of the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute(NHLBI).
Dr. Conti was President of the American College of Cardiology in 1989-90. He is also an elected member of the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation, the American Clinical and Climatological Association, the Association of University Cardiologists, and the Association of Professors of Cardiology. From 1990-97 he was chairman of the Asymptomatic Cardiac Ischemia Pilot (ACIP) Trial NHLBI funded multicenter – multinational study. In 1991, he received an Honorary Fellowship from the College of Medicine of South Africa (FCP –SA Hon.). In May 1996 he was elected to the Johns Hopkins University Society of Scholars. In 1999, he received the Gifted Teacher Award from the Florida Chapter of the ACC. In June, 2000, he received a “Docteur Honoris Causa” from the University of Marseilles. In 2002, he was selected for the Gifted Teacher Award by the American College of Cardiology. In September of 2006 Dr. Conti received the 2006 Presidential Citation award from Florida Chapter American College of Cardiology. He has served on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Cardiology, the American Heart Journal, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, European Heart Journal, and many other national and international journals. Dr. Conti is the author or co-author of over 700 scientific papers, book chapters and abstracts and has edited six books and written two. He is Editor-in-Chief of the international journal, Clinical Cardiology, Editor-in-Chief of the ACC Audio Journal ACCEL, and Associate Editor of CardioSource, the ACC Educational website.
